How to Practice the 8 Limbs of Yoga During Class

The word Ashtanga is sanskrit for “eight limbs”; the method of practice set forth in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Here are some suggestions for how to practice the 8 limbs within the structure of a yoga class.

  1. Practice the first limb of Ashtanga (Yama) through non-violence of speech, by maintaining a quiet zone unless communicating with your teacher directly. Avoid distracting others through speech while class is in session.

  2. Practice the second limb of Ashtanga (Niyama) through cleanliness, by bathing regularly and avoid wearing pungent odors like perfume. Also, practice self study and introspection by bringing your attention inward.

  3. Practice the third limb of Ashtanga (Asana) by maintaining a steady and comfortable posture, and avoid placing your body in positions where it may become injured.

  4. Practice the fourth limb of Ashtanga (Pranayama) by remaining mindful of your breath, and if possible practice the ujjayi pranayama technique throughout the entirety of your asana practice.

  5. Practice the fifth limb of Ashtanga (Pratyahara) by leaving your cell phone off and withdrawing the senses by directing them inward through the art of drishti (eye gazing point).

  6. Practice the sixth limb of Ashtanga (Dharana) by focusing on your individual practice, recognize that you are in a position of safety, and you are allowed this space and time in your life to devote entirely to yourself.

  7. Practice the seventh limb of Ashtanga (Dhyana) by developing a meditative state of mind, through managing your mind with attention to breath, and realizing that you have arrived at “home”, within yourself.

  8. Practice the eight limb of Ashtanga (Samadhi) by letting go of avidya (ignorance) and ego, release preconceived ideas about what you “should” or “should not” be doing, and become fully immersed in the present moment experience.
