India doesn’t own yoga, in the same way that the United States doesn’t own the traditions of the Navajo, the Cherokee, or the Salish Tribes of Washington. The indigenous and native people of India, the Dravidians, were the founders of yoga philosophy, for sure, and their culture, language, and their people have been systematically destroyed by the culture of the Aryans… This is just a fact. The Aryan belief system that spawned what is now called “Hinduism” borrowed, or stole, many Dravidian belief systems and structures, and reclaimed it as their own. This is the narrative, the story, of the Aryan conquests of lands, and taking wealth that was not protected by a people who did not see reality as being something scarce, but rather something abundant and plentiful; something to be shared.
Now days people from all over the world go to India to study yoga, but we know that the exploitation of yoga beliefs happens in India just like it happens in the US. In fact, many American yoga teachers go to India to teach yoga and profit on the exoticism of the area, while they have no connection to the ancient teachings of Yoga; that of the Yoga Sutras, and of the Samkhya Philosophy…. both of which are clearly, and now archaeologically proven to be of Dravidian origin.
If a group of people is to be credited with founding yoga, the Dravidians would be it. Research for yourself the Dravidian Nationalist movement, and the studies of the Dravidian Universities that still exist. The people that inhabited India for much longer than the conquerors whose culture merged, if you will, and created hierarchical dominance, and turned the system of yoga into one of the darshanas.
Ashtanga Yoga is a teaching of rebellion. It teaches, so very clearly, that what you see is not real, but is a projection of your mind, and behind it all is your true self. The Sutras are out there for everyone to see, yet so many people do not read them, and instead of actually studying, reciting, and chanting them, white people, or Aryan descendants, make reference to them, and gaslight their students, indoctrinating them to their own system, and make some claim that somehow yoga is a part of their system… it isn’t. Yoga is unique. It is perhaps the oldest organized philosophy (Samkhya) in the world…. and while it is true that we cannot read the tablets that were uncovered at Harappa, we can use our better judgement, and our intuition, to see what has happened when Aryans have invaded, just as they did in Hawaii, North America, and so many diverse cultures that have been subdued by the culture of resource capitalization.
Yoga does not belong to anyone, yoga is by definition, a rebellion against systems of thought. To learn it from a Hindu is to study Hinduism,
